Global Returnable Asset Identifier (GRAI)

GRAI

A returnable asset is a reusable package or transport equipment of a certain value. This is the case for medical gas bottles, or plastic cases, or transport containers for fresh blood, etc.
The Global Returnable Asset Identifier (GRAI) provides for the unique identification of such an asset; it utilizes an GS1 assigned Global Company Prefix enabling a user to develop, assign and maintain a unique asset number for equipment, resources, supplies, etc. in order to track its location and / or user. The GS1 identification number of a returnable asset (GRAI) is defined as a physical item with no reference to the contents. The GS1 identification of a returnable asset (GRAI) enables tracking as well as recording of all relevant data.
The GRAI is prefixed by an Application Identifier '8003' (orange). It is based on the EAN-13 or UCC-12 Data Structure.
The GS1 Company Prefix is the one allocated to the owner of the asset. It makes the number unique worldwide. The zero in the leftmost position is added to generate 14 digits in the asset identification number field.
The Asset Type is a number assigned by the owner of the asset to uniquely identify each type of asset. It is followed by a Check Digit. Its verification, which must be carried out in the application software, ensures that the number is correctly composed.
The serial number is assigned by the owner of the asset. It identifies an Individual Asset within a given Asset Type. The field is alphanumeric and can contain up to 16 digits. Look at the example we have prepared on the page linked here.
