Electronic messages are used to communicate information between trading parties in the Supply Chain. For example, wholesalers and hospitals may send their purchase orders to their suppliers, who return later electronic despatch advices.
These messages must be standardised to communicate a common business meaning between disparate IT environments.
The GS1 System addresses these needs with standard EDI solutions including EANCOM (a subset of the UN-EDIFACT standard) and ebXML. These messages include GTIN's to identify items, GLN (Global Location Numbers) to identify locations (delivery place, etc.) and other elements which belong to the definitions library. As an example, informaticians can consult the ORDER user guide for the Swiss Healthcare market which explains the business meaning of each data element included in it.
