GS1 System at the core of the Solution

April 2004. The Department of Health for Ireland, together with GS1 Ireland, have very recently launched an innovative solution for the treatment of haemophiliacs which has the potential for European and indeed global adoption.

The solution, announced by Minister for Health and Children, Mr Michael Martin TD, promises improved clinical management for the patient, in the hospital and the home, as well as a fail-safe mechanism for product recall through complete supply chain Traceability, to the factor vial level. The solution will take advantage of the comprehensive functionality of the GS1 System.

The solution, which will record the flow of clotting factor concentrates throughout the distribution cool chain and record and manage patient use as well as the automatic replenishment of inventory levels, will be piloted this coming summer with mass roll-out planned for the Spring of 2005.

Pilot with a View of European Adoption

Very importantly the pilot will be monitored by a group of experts – of worldwide renown – not only to validate the solution for Ireland but potentially for European, and perhaps even global, adoption.

This ‘Expert Group’ consists of the World Federation of Haemophilia (WFH), the Food and Drug Administration, centres for haemophiliac treatment from Canada, UK and Continental Europe, the European Commission, as well all major suppliers of factor products. The monitoring activity will be co-ordinated by the WHO and the NCHCD based at St James’s Hospital in Dublin.

This initiative is the first of its kind in the world! Watch this space for more news as the pilot develops and gathers pace.
